A mind that moves at a speed of light can be exciting or it can be exhausting. It yearns to fast forward to the future to create perfect scenarios or quickly rewind to the past to erase the imperfect ones. What it doesn’t do is pause and be present. If you have one of those minds, most of the time you are not actually present in your body.
You know how in cartoons sometimes the soul is shown leaving the characters? Just like that, an overthinking mind causes your soul to leave you. And that is definitely not good for the body. It leaves the body weak; hungry for more and with a thirst for perfection that the present can’t quench. That’s why we look at old pictures, why we daydream.
See the present is lacking because it is live streaming. You have to watch the boring parts to get to the good parts. The present is lacking because when it is the future it has the support of your mental pastels and sketchbook. It is a raw file which your brain airbrushes and adds filters to when it becomes the past. The present is lacking so what do you do? Read a book. Play a game. Watch a show to make it more interesting, to give the mind the stimulation it craves. But that defeats the purpose, doesn’t it? By indulging in these activities you escape. In another story, in another scene, in competition. Therefore you are not present.
So stop. Try taking a breath on purpose. Touch a wall with intention. Run your finger under a line written in a book. This is your reality and you’re in control of this moment. Feel your soul returning back into your body. Even if it’s just visiting greet it, be kind, be hospitable so it takes regular breaks from being in all the places you were and will be and returns again soon.
Good job Tom. Now you can chase the future again as if it’s Jerry.

July 10, 2018Great read! I sometimes struggle with the present, too. It definitely takes me some practice to be in the moment and realize what my actual, current surroundings and happenings are.

July 10, 2018I think many struggle with the present because of countless distractions. Floating off into another realm isn’t always bad. It maybe needed sometimes. Sometimes floating brings the peace. ❤
